When the opportunity arises, you must do your best and you must not give up – this sentence from the Hollywood classic ‘Rebel Without a Reason’, implemented in the mid-1950s, seems to describe the life and professional journey of an entire generation of the Karadzic family, determined to sow the seeds of quality content in the world of ‘moving images’ that will proudly offer to the wider international public.
The combination of diligence, creation, a developed network of personal contacts and years of fruitful experience is linked by family care and love in the project of creating MM Production, which, at the beginning of this decade, with only two employees, plunged into the turbulent waters of the film industry.
The company was founded in 2011, but the story of it goes back in time, when the young and talented Montenegrin actor Milutin Mima Karadzic was beginning to build his rich career, at that time, as well as nowadays very prestigious Yugoslav actor scene. Mima realized early that the path to the stars was most often sprinkled with thorns. He did not give up and continued to survive in the changed circumstances, remaining true to himself and expanding the scope of his activities and interests. So, eight years ago, with the help of his sister Angelina’s business skills and the tremendous experience and talent of brother Milan, he decided to turn his complete family knowledge and energy into one new lifelong entrepreneurial venture. The results are some of the pearls of recent Montenegrin and regional cinema productions: Budva on the Foam of the Sea, Gorcilo, Did you come to see me, Peral of Bojana…
A small but persistent and diligent team in a minute become an army when it comes to producing a movie or television series. The contacts that have been built over the years allow the modest Karadzic team to gain the strength of a real giant in situations where serious cinematic projects are offered.
Such a small and enterprising crew is like a small and agile ship: manages better on the turbulent sea it is able to capture the right wave easily, and to change the direction to success faster. In complex audio-visual projects within the creative industries, this is often an advantage, as the part-time involvement of artistic (screenwriters, directors, actors…) and technical staff (complete team for production preparation, on-site project implementation and post-production) constantly offers fresh and inspirational combinations of co-workers. The company has an extraordinary collaboration with Vision Team, which has a rich selection of technical equipment for film project shooting, and when the opportunities require them to implement the most sophisticated solutions, the management of MM production does not shy away from business communication with major global companies such as the BBC, whose shots they used for purpose of recording a series Budva on the Foam of the Sea.
In their understanding, no project is less important than another. The reason for this lies in the fact that when you gain the trust of your audience, you create expectations that you must always and fully fulfil. That is why, regardless of the scale of the business challenges that they accept, they do not spare themselves and always do their best. As a responsible company, they quickly adapt to changing opportunities on the market on which they operate. Thus, they became the first company to receive a tax refund of 25%, according to the Cinematography Law, which aims to encourage the expansion of domestic production and markets. They do not finance their projects by relying solely on possible support from the state and international funds, but above all by their own resources and by establishing business cooperation with domestic and foreign companies of various profiles. They see entrepreneurship in the creative industries as a great opportunity to realize original artistic ideas, but also as a complex business challenge, because the success of their projects depends not only on the reputation of the production company they build, but also on all the institutions and companies with which they collaborate and invest in the creation of art.
Working together can always achieve more. The motifs of art are often drawn from life, and in the life of the artist, art itself is more often intertwined with the challenges posed by the stirring surface of everyday life. MM Production successfully continues to navigate both waters – an uncertain reality and an artistic dream.
